What actually happened

GivEnergy Ltd filed a notice of intention to appoint administrators on 7 April 2026 and entered administration two days later, on 9 April. The company has ceased trading as a manufacturer and its staff have been made redundant. Reporting on the administrators' filings puts unsecured creditors owed more than £17m, with the business swinging from a £6.2m operating profit to a £6.5m operating loss the previous year. As of the most recent reporting, whether the business is sold on or wound down entirely is still undecided.

What that means for your monitoring today

Your inverter and battery don't need a live connection to keep generating, storing, and discharging - that part of the system runs on its own regardless of what happens to the company behind it. The app and cloud portal, though, are reported to be run by a separate group company, GivEnergy Software Ltd, which hasn't itself entered administration. Basic local control is reported to remain free, but the full app and portal - live and historical data, remote access, and the API integrations built on top of it - now sit behind a new paid tier, reported at around £4.99/month. Cloud infrastructure isn't free to run, and with the parent manufacturer not trading, several of the sources below flag the same point: the long-term stability of that cloud service is genuinely uncertain, whatever the current price.

Why Wattlas doesn't carry the same risk

Wattlas was built independently from day one - not owned, funded, or influenced by GivEnergy or any other inverter, battery, or charger manufacturer. Free needs no GivEnergy connection at all: it forecasts your expected generation from your system's own spec and live weather, so it works whether or not any manufacturer's cloud is running. Plus reads a GivEnergy system the same way any third-party app reads any API - through your own GivEnergy Cloud account today, so it needs whatever access that account has, the same as GivEnergy's own app does. What doesn't change is who you're paying and who holds your history: that's Wattlas, not GivEnergy, so your account, your generation history, and Free's forecast are still there for you regardless of what happens to GivEnergy as a company - only the live read of a connected system depends on GivEnergy Cloud staying up, same as it always has.

Wattlas can also read a GivEnergy system through a local GivTCP connection on your own network, with no GivEnergy Cloud account at all - but that's an advanced, opt-in option for households who already self-host GivTCP and an MQTT broker. It's not a plug-and-play alternative to a subscription today, so most readers of this page should plan around GivEnergy Cloud, not this option. A simpler, no-self-hosting-required way to connect locally (marked TBD above) is something we're looking at - no promises or timeline yet, but it's on our radar.

Wattlas vs. GivEnergy Premium

  Wattlas Plus GivEnergy Premium
Price £1.76/month Free for 3 months ~£4.99/month (reported)
Owned/run by GivEnergy No - independent of every manufacturer it connects to Yes - GivEnergy Software Ltd, a group company of the manufacturer now in administration
Forecast vs. actual, with alerts Yes - the point of the app: a comparison, with an alert when it drifts Live and historical data display
Also covers SolarEdge, Tesla Powerwall, and EV chargers (Zappi, Ohme, Hypervolt, Easee) GivEnergy hardware only

Wattlas Plus's live comparison connects through your own GivEnergy Cloud account today, so it needs whatever access that account has - it doesn't remove the need for a GivEnergy account, it just means your monitoring itself isn't owned by GivEnergy. GivEnergy Premium's price and feature set are as reported by the third-party sources linked below at the time this page was last updated - check GivEnergy's own app for the current terms.

Common questions

Will my GivEnergy system stop working now GivEnergy is in administration?

No. Your inverter and battery keep operating on their own regardless of what happens to the company - administration affects the business behind the product, not the hardware sitting on your wall, which needs no live connection to run.

Do I need a GivEnergy Premium subscription to use Wattlas?

Free doesn't need any GivEnergy connection at all. Plus's live comparison connects through your own GivEnergy Cloud account today, the same way any third-party app reads any API - so it needs whatever access your GivEnergy account has. Either way, Wattlas's own price and access to your history don't depend on GivEnergy staying in business.

Is Wattlas affiliated with GivEnergy?

No. Wattlas is built and run independently of GivEnergy and every other manufacturer it connects to - it isn't owned, funded, or influenced by any of them. See the full FAQ for more.
